OM System or Philips?
· Both are leaders in digital dictation. If you are choosing a dictaphone to use with locally installed dictation management software, the major difference between the OM System DS-9100 and the Philips DPM8000 is the software that comes with them. Both models are high-quality dictaphones with excellent microphones and both have the option to switch to Conference Mode for recording multiple speakers.
· The OM System ODMS R8 software and the Philips SpeechExec Pro software can be integrated with your Dragon profile, if you are using Dragon Naturally Speaking.
· Both ODMS and SpeechExec software can be configured for seamless integration between author and transcriptionist. Both ODMS and SpeechExec facilitate auto download of the relevant dictaphone and can be configured to have dictations appear in the Transcription software as they are downloaded.
· The ODMS R8 software comes as a perpetual licence. The SpeechExec Pro Dictate and Pro Transcribe licences each come as two-year subscriptions. While the subscription model appears more expensive, SpeechExec does have a couple of advantages – all updates included with a current subscription and the same licence can be installed on more than one computer – although only used on one computer at a time.

Professional Dictaphone with browser-accessed cloud account for file management – includes options for Speech Recognition
The same dictaphone options are available, but instead of using the locally installed software as your workflow solution you can subscribe to the relevant Cloud solution - OM System ODMS Cloud or Philips SpeechLive.
Both ODMS Cloud and SpeechLive are secure cloud-based workflow systems which allow instant sharing of dictation files between authors and transcriptionists and can be accessed from anywhere, anytime. Both are subscription-based and both are regularly updated.
Being accessed via the browser, neither requires software installation and they are therefore Mac and Windows compatible, unlike the OM System and Philips software models.
Both ODMS Cloud and SpeechLive facilitate auto download of files from the dictaphone and both include a smartphone dictation app with author subscription. Dictations can be sent directly from the smartphone to the ODMS Cloud account or the SpeechLive account.
Transcriptionists require a subscription to the same account as the authors, and they can use the OM System foot pedals with ODMS Cloud, and the Philips foot pedals with SpeechLive.
Looking for Speech Recognition?
Here is where ODMS Cloud and SpeechLive really differ.
At this stage, ODMS Cloud only offers background speech recognition – configured into the workflow so that files are uploaded and are transcribed with the Speech Recognition function prior to landing in your ODMS Cloud account, where your transcriptionist can access the audio file and the transcript for editing.

Dictate with smart phone dictation app – either instead of using a dictaphone or as an alternative for when you don’t have the dictaphone with you.
The smartphone dictation apps included with author subscription for OM System’s ODMS Cloud and Philips SpeechLive are as good as it gets. Both are included in the relevant Dictation Workflow Solution and can be used in place of a dictaphone or as a handy option when you don’t have the dictaphone with you.
