The PSM5000 SpeechMike Ambient is a wearable dictation microphone which has been designed to enhance AI-driven speech recognition workflows. It features four high-performance beam-forming microphones for ambient recording and the ability to capture high-fidelity single and multi-speaker audio - perfect for AI transcription, conversational AI and ambient scribe scenarios.

Transforming Healthcare with Philips SpeechMike Ambient Wearable AI Assistant

The healthcare landscape is shifting, with clinicians facing growing administrative

burdens, language barriers, and time pressure. Improving documentation,

communication, and workflow efficiency enables healthcare professionals to focus

more on patient care, reduce burnout, and improve care quality.

What is ambient AI?

Ambient AI refers to artificial intelligence technology that can listen to clinical conversations and automatically generate documentation without interrupting the workflow.

Instead of requiring clinicians to dictate notes or manually enter data into an electronic health record, these methods – also known as ambient documentation – operate quietly in the background via ambient listening. They capture relevant information during patient interactions and transform it into structured clinical documentation.

The goal is not only to make documentation faster and less of a burden, but to make it less intrusive. By reducing the need for active data entry, ambient AI allows clinicians to focus more fully on their patients, rather than dividing attention between conversation and documentation.

In this way, ambient AI represents a shift in how documentation is approached – moving from a task clinicians must complete, to a process that supports them during care delivery.

Enhanced patient care with ambient listening

• Enables hands-free documentation—no device handling required

• Supports natural, uninterrupted conversations with patients

• Captures relevant info passively in the background

• Reduces cognitive load and administrative distractions

• Fosters trust and deeper clinician-patient connections

• Improves overall quality of care and focus

How ambient AI enhances patient care across settings

Emergency departments

Streamlines documentation during high-stress, fast-paced situations.

Inpatient rounds

Automatically generates comprehensive notes during ward rounds.

Outpatient clinics

Enhances patient interactions by reducing time spent on documentation.

Multi room use

With a docking station (ACC5000) and wireless adapter (ACC5100) in each room, doctors can move from room to room with their SpeechMike Ambient and pair to the new workstation within seconds.  Multiple users can do this with the one dock and wireless adapter set up - only one at a time on the one workstation though.

Using the wireless adapter

Pair the SpeechMike Ambient and the wireless adapter in the docking station.  With the docking station connected to the computer, you can insert the SpeechMike Ambient and the wireless adapter, press the link button and pair within seconds.

The Bluetooth connection doesn't require that the SpeechMike Ambient and the wireless adapter / docking station be in line of sight. However, the maximum distance between the SpeechMike Ambient and the wireless adapter should not be more than 25 meters.

Philips has done a comparison test, with some different microphones, to see how well the different microphones perform for speech recognition accuracy.

Speech recognition accuracy benchmark

Test setup (January 2026)

Objective

Evaluate whether a built-in laptop (Apple MacBook), smartphone (Apple iPhone) or table microphone (Tandem Health) are equal or better than Philips SpeechMike Ambient (Dictation mode).

Test scenarios

SpeechMike Ambient worn on lanyard at 0.25 m. Other devices placed at 0.6 m and 2.5 m. In a separate test, the speaker moves around the room and is turned 180° away from the device.

Measurements were performed in quiet and simulated noise scenarios, defined as a distracting voice played 2 m to the side of the recording device.

Average speech recognition rate calculated and compared.

Results summary

Philips SpeechMike Ambient consistently achieved the highest speech recognition accuracy in both normal and noisy conditions. It also delivered the best performance when the speaker was in motion.

Laptop and desktop microphones showed significantly reduced accuracy as distance increased or in busy environments.

Smartphones were only reliable in ideal quiet conditions; performance dropped quickly with noise, distance or movement.
